I've had eczema since I was a kid and I've tried a lot of different moisturizers. Before I was using the Eucerin Calming Creme for years and I hated it. It did keep my skin moisturized and it calmed my spots ( my face, neck, chest and upper back) whenever they became inflamed but, it was way too greasy and thick for me. Then I tried using the Aquaphor but it was like putting Vaseline on my face. So my new dermatologist told me to try Cetaphil DailyAdvance Ultra Hydrating Lotion and I absolutely looove it . It's not too thick or greasy and I would recommend it for anyone with this condition.

Phototherapy or light treatment is an effective treatment for eczema. With phototherapy, various wavelengths of sunlight (UVB, UVA, combined UVA/UVB, UVA1, or narrow-band) are administered in a unit that is similar to a telephone booth but which is lined by fluorescent appearing light bulbs. The type of phototherapy that you will receive will be determined by your dermatologist. It is usually administered twice weekly. Possible side effects of phototherapy are redness, sunburn, or dryness. Long-term side effects, which are more likely with white skin, are possible skin cancers and enhanced aging.

In general, keep the skin lubricated. Apply oil such as Neutrogena body oil or Alpha-Keri oil to the skin at the end of ones shower. Vaseline is even more helpful if not too greasy. Do not take more than one bath or shower a day. Use lukewarm water, as hot water dries out the skin. When toweling dry pat, don't rub. Blot the skin so there is still some water left on the skin. Soap irritates and dries the skin, so keep it away from the eczema. When bathing limit the use of soap to the face, armpits, genital area, and feet. For soap, use Cetaphil, Oil of Olay, Dove or Basis. Avoid contact with wool or rough clothing. Cotton clothes (100%) are best. When laundering the clothes, use no fabric softener, Kling or dryer sheets. Wash the clothes using dye free, fragrance free detergents such as the "All free" detergent. It is possible to find a treatment routine that controls nummular eczema.

In those children with allergy causing the eczema, they will usually get rashes or more extensive eczema soon after eating a particular food or drinking milk (in the case of babies). If you notice this, remove that food from your child's diet ( if you have a baby, this will need to be done under supervision with an appropriate other formula ). If there is a marked improvement on removal of the suspected food, then the food may have been the cause - cautious reintroduction of the food after 3-4 weeks will enable you to be sure. If on reintroduction of the food, the skin remains clear, the food can continue in the diet. If the skin flares up again, that food needs to be removed from the diet. In those toddlers who do have an allergy to a food causing eczema, a trial of reintroduction can be made in 6 - 12 months time as many children will grow out of these allergies.
